Annual HYPACK seminar

Hydrography and Sea Geodesy Department organized an annual HYPACK seminar at Odessa National Maritime Academy (ONMA) on October 22-24, 2013. O.M. Shemiakin, First Deputy Rector of ONMA opened the seminar. Pat Sanders, the president of HYPACK (USA) held the seminar.

More than 100 people took part in the seminar: representatives of the Shipping Register of Ukraine, State Enterprise "State Hydrography", "Delta-Pilot" of Odessa, Nikolaev, Mariupol ICC, "State Enterprise of Water Ways of Ukraine" ChornomorNDIproekt, State Hydrography of Georgia (Poti), Diving Center of Bulgaria (Ruse), ChernomorTechFleet, Odessa State Environmental University, Seafaring College of Technical Fleet; and ONMA teachers and cadets.

Pat Sanders presented the modern software dealing with processing of hydrographical investigation; electronic navigation charts preparation for dredging operations processing and also material processing connected with the work of the offshore fleet.

Products of HYPACK company are used in all basins of the Global Ocean as a modern product for marine fleet safety. In conclusion, Pat Sanders presented new elements of HYPACK software to be used in the educational process.

Testing for those who wish to get personal certificates which will give an opportunity to work with HYPACK software was held at the end of the seminar. The seminar participants exchanged their opinions, wishes and made the decisions set out in the relevant protocol.

Train the Trainers Course on Maritime Piracy. Seafarers Pre-Departure Piracy Awareness Training

Two-day train the trainers course on Maritime piracy. Seafarers Pre-Departure Piracy Awareness Training took place on November 18-19, 2013 on the basis of Odessa National Maritime Academy (ONMA).

The international programme "Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme" (MPHRP) is established for maritime community and organizations, whose activity is connected with employment and representation of seafarers' interests.

This course includes the information about anti-crisis measures that could be taken by companies before the departure, during and after the incident of piracy attack or armed robbery. The programme of the course was approved by MPHRP partner organizations. Toon van de Sande (the Netherlands), MPHRP Deputy Director, MPHRP trainer of "Humanitarian Response to Maritime Piracy" held experts training.

Upon the finishing of the course, the participants were given Sample Certificates.

The 28th Assembly Session and the 111th Council Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The 28th Assembly Session and the 111th Council Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) took place in London ( United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) from 26 November to 4 December 2013.

M.V. Miyusov, the Rector of Odessa National Maritime Academy (ONMA) is a member of the official delegation of Ukraine in accordance with the terms of reference for a foreign business trip, which was approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine on November 15, 2013 and was endorsed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on November 8, 2013.

The results of participation of Ukranian delegation in the work of the Assembly and the meetings of the IMO Council ensured national interests protection of Ukraine through direct participation in the IMO mandatory and recommendatory instruments consideration and adoption as well as amendments and additions to the existing instruments of the Organization.

Besides, the awareness level of the National Marine Representatives concerning international standards and rules regarding Safety of Navigation, Safety of Life at Sea, Marine Environmental Protection and appropriate conditions for seafarers' employment established by the IMO international documents. IMO Member States were informed of Ukraine's contribution to safety of world maritime navigation. The delegation of Ukraine took part in the election of the new IMO Council.

Terms of reference were carried out in full.

Series of meetings with the IMO representatives were held during the Assembly, namely, with Mr. Koji Sekimizu, Secretary General of IMO; Mr. Andrew Uinbou, the Director of Maritime Security; Mr Jasper Lordapom, the Head of Policy and Planning. The representatives of the Ukrainian delegation, including K.L. Billiar, the Deputy of Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the IMO, attended these meetings.

The following issues were considered during these meetings:

  1. Report of Ukraine in the last 5 years, on the Implementation of Regulation 1/8 "Quality standards" of The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) 1978, as amended.
  2. Participation of Mr. Koji Sekimizu, Secretary General of IMO, in the second International Forum on Seafarers' Education, Training and Crewing (ETC Forum) which is to be held on April 23-24, 2014 in Odessa.
  3. Participation of Mr. Koji Sekimizu, Secretary General of IMO, in the 70th anniversary celebration since Odessa National Maritime Academy (ONMA) foundation, the meetings with the teaching staff, ONMA cadets and Ukraine Maritime Community.
  4. Detailed planning of official visit of Mr. Koji Sekimizu, Secretary General of IMO to Ukraine.

During the visit to London, M.V. Miyusov, the Rector of ONMA had the opportunity to meet with the representatives of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology ( IMarEST) and Nautical Institute of Great Britain (NI), which have been collaborating with Odessa National Maritime Academy for several years.

The Rector of ONMA had the opportunity to meet with Mr. David Loosley, the Executive Director of IMarEST; Mr. Tim Simson, the Membership Manager of IMarEST; Mrs. Charlotte Lord, the Head of Programmes; Mr. Ruban Tarmaradzha, the Head of Finance Department; and Mr. Steve Bodie, the Head of Partnerships Department. Under terms of the current agreement the issues of further cooperation between ONMA and IMarEST were discussed during the negotiations, namely the opportunity for ONMA cadets of all specialties to become members of IMarEST for a period of 12 months on a gratuitous basis. And they may have the opportunity to use the IMarEST electronic library with unlimited access.

It was also agreed about visit and participation of Mr. David Loosley, the Executive Director of IMarEST in the second International Forum on Seafarers' Education, Training and Crewing, 70th anniversary celebration since Odessa National Maritime Academy foundation, meetings with the teaching staff and ONMA cadets.

Mr. Philip Wake, the Executive Director of NI, confirmed his intention to visit Ukraine during the second International Forum on Seafarers' Education, Training and Crewing, as well as to take part in the 70th anniversary celebration since of ONMA foundation and to meet with the members of the The Nautical Institute of Ukraine, the teaching staff and ONMA cadets.

 


International Specialized Exhibition "Education and Career 2013"

Odessa National Maritime Academy (ONMA) took part in the International Specialized Exhibition "Education and Career 2013" and the International Exhibition of foreign Educational Establishments "Education Abroad" on November 14-16, 2013.

The exhibition "Education and Career" is held every year in order to form a single educational space in Ukraine, to involve public interest into education, and achievements promotion of our state in the educational sphere.

The coordinators of the exhibition are the following: the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine and the Znanny Society of Ukraine.

The following people participated in the solemn opening of the exhibition: V. Kremen, President of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences (NAPS), Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassadors of Republic of France, Republic of Austria, Republic of Poland in Ukraine, as well as educationists, students and representatives of mass media.

ONMA received Grand Prize Award in nomination «The Best Display Stand Design and achievements in educational institution advertising».

ONMA delegates consisting of S.A. Karianskyi, Dean of Automation Faculty, O.N. Mazur, Head of Advertisement and Information Department were solemnly awarded diplomas for holding the presentations of educational establishments.

XVI International Conference on Transport and Logistics on Transit Potential of Ukraine. Efficient Infrastructure and Logistics for Transport in South-Eastern Europe"

Under the International Black Sea Transport Forum Odessa National Maritime Academy (ONMA) took part in the International conference and exhibition on Transport and Logistics on Transit Potential of Ukraine. Efficient Infrastructure and Logistics for Transport in South-Eastern Europe on October 16-18. About 150 companies and organizations in the sphere of transport from more than 12 countries participated in the Forum.

The event was aimed at consideration and possible solutions of the issues concerning transit potential of Ukraine, with special emphasis on the transit routes by shipping courses.

The International Black Sea Transport Forum played an important role in the foreground tasks implementation for the transportation industry in Ukraine, as well as contributed to the search of new sources of investment for transport and international transit freight traffic development.
