The second Sub-Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and an extraordinary meeting of the International Executive Committee of IAMU

The second Sub-Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on «Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping» (HTW2) was held in London (UK) from 2 to 6 February. The Ukrainian delegation took part in the subcommittee's work represented by V.M. Zakharchenko, the Deputy Rector on Scientific and Pedagogical Work, D.S.Zhukov, a senior lecturer of the Ship Control Department, who represented the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) at the Subcommittee meeting. 19 issues have been worked out in the course of the agenda. The most interesting are the following:

  • Report on forged certificates of competency
  • Revision of Guidelines for Course Approval, Amendment and Approval of model courses, and Analysis of Validated Model Implementation Courses
  • Revision and Approval of Model Courses for specialized training of tankers staff and model course of the English language
  • Human factor impact
  • Mandatory Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters
  • Revised STCW Convention special training requirements for personnel of passenger ships
  • Agenda for the next HTW3 Sub-Committee
  • Election of Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the HTW Sub-Committee. The Sub-Committee elected Mr. Bradley Groves (Australia) as Chairman and Ms. Mayte Medina (the USA) as Vice-Chairman.

Report to the Maritime Safety Committee was adopted according to the results of the Sub-committee. The full text of the Sub-committee materials can be found on the IMO's website. www.imo.org.

An extraordinary meeting of the International Executive Committee of IAMU took place at the IMO Headquaters on 6-7 February. M.V.Miyusov, the Rector of the academy, Doctor of Engineering, Professor, D.S.Zhukov, a senior lecturer of the Ship Control Department represented ONMA at the meeting.

The main subject on the Agenda was the question of further strengthening cooperation of IMO and IAMU. ONMA heads the IAMU Sub-committee on the interaction with the IMO. Koji Sekimizu, IMO Secretary-General was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science with presenting relevant diploma based on the protocol ¹ 9 - the meeting of the ONMA Academic Council during the IAMU International Executive Committee of April 29, 2014.
